CHURCH ELDER ROBBED FRAIL NEIGHBOUR, 94

By Lauren Campbell

Printer Print Article

A CHURCH elder befriended a 94-year-old neighbour and then spent months stealing cash out of her purse to pay off her own debts.

Heartless Janet Murphy, 51, admitted stealing £365 from Kilbirnie pensioner Elizabeth King - but Mrs King's daughters claim it is far more than that.

Mary Gannon and Liz King Jnr thought their mother was being looked after and were delighted she had such a great neighbour who popped in to help her and keep her company. But that was not the case.

Mary told the Herald: "She pretended to be a good neighbour. She would go down at night when my mum was in herself. My sister asked me to take extra money out for my mum because they were going shopping, so I did.

"Then she phoned saying she was shocked that there was no money left. My son then set up a video camera and we could see them."
