AN AMERICAN BULL DOG which onlookers claim attacked and killed another dog in a Saltcoats street is being held in police custody after its owner refused to have it put down.

And the owner - a 60-year-old man - is also facing charges which allege he allowed an animal in his care to kill another dog.

Shocked members of the public tried to intervene following the horror attack on Tuesday - with one man attempting to use his plastered arm to prevent the dog biting its victim, a small papillion.

A sheriff will now be asked to rule that the dog must die.
