ARDEER PLANT SET TO CLOSE - 90 JOBS WILL BE LOST
By Craig Nisbet
Trade union Unite say they are angry at Nobel Enterprises Limited’s announcement that they intend to cease production at their Ardeer plant by the end of December - resulting in the loss of up to 90 jobs.
Unite members, who produce nitrocellulose at Ardeer, are dismayed by this announcement which is devastating for them and their families, say the union. Unite represents over 100 members on site.
The chemicals company has acknowledged that they are prepared to enter into consultation with Unite. However, they have also stated that should redundancies take place, agreed terms and conditions relating to redundancy payments carried over from ICI’s time at the site are at risk.
The company has blamed competition and continuing losses at the plant for the halting of production.
Unite Regional Industrial Organiser Andy Macfarlane, said: “The news will come as a hammer-blow to our members on site and will affect the wider community, where these job losses will have serious economic and social consequences.”
Unite met NEL management on Monday.
