THE Garnock Academy S4 team lined up in the Ayrshire Schools Under 16 Final against Carrick Academy at Ayr's Dam Park Stadium and put up a battling display before finally going down 2-1 in an absorbing final.

The South Ayrshire lads, who reached this season's Scottish Schools Cup Quarter-Finals only sealed victory with five minutes remaining in the 80-minute match.

David McKenna bagged the consolation goal for the runners-up, who were captained by Calum Hercus and featured twins Jamie and Bobby Houston in the line-up.

Proud coach Lee Gardner said afterwards:"The lads really enjoyed the experience of playing in a major final and there was a fair crowd and a good atmosphere at the stadium.

"The lads will be in the senior team next season and it would be nice if they could get into the final again."
