COMEBACK KINGS
By Stewart McConnell
IRVINE MEADOW 3 BATHGATE THISTLE 2
IN a bruising contest of the East-West heavyweights Meadow had crashed to the canvas by half-time, trailing 2-0 to a ferasome side who looked to have dealt a shattering blow to their hopes of national glory.
However in the style of a prized fighter they picked themselves off the floor, went on the onslaught and three knockout blows - in the form of a five minute hat-trick from Brian McGinty helped Meadow prgoress and finally erase the bitter disappointment of their semi-final defeat against the East Coast Big Guns at Firhill three and a half years earlier.
Some people have questioned the team spirit of Chris Strain's big spending side but it was there in abundance and helped make up for last year's defeat at the same stage against then holders Linlithgow Rose.
