Rapala Fishing Frenzy
By Narin Bahar
You'd think that if you were a keen angler nothing would replace heading out to the lake for a restful few hours waiting for something to twitch on the end of your line. But this game actually makes for a fun alternative - and you needn't even brave the cold.
The rendering of the water and the fish are, simply, stunning - and you get a better view than you would at a manky reservoir of a weekend, plus there's no abandoned shopping trolleys to get your lure caught in.
The game boasts seven different lakes with 20 different fish species to try and track down. So get into your boat and head for your chosen spot, cast off and wait. There is a bit of an arcade button mashing feel to reeling the fish in, which is quite fun and can get you some great bonuses if you pull off the relevant combos - all of which can be immortalised on the game's online leader boards, which at least gives you something to aim for.
You can play in tournament mode, open fishing and quick play challenges. The one notable thing for me was the leap of difficulty between the first and second tournament level seemed ridiculously hard - and it was only once I'd upgraded my kit that I came close to hooking anything decent in the medium mode.
The only negatives with this are the lack of multiplayer (a real oversight with any game nowadays) and the product placement - I know it's called Rapala Fishing Frenzy, but honestly, I've seen Bond films with less incongruously placed items!
Three stars and a perfect Christmas present for the angler in your life.
