Choose an entrance mat that makes the right impression

What do you want from your entrance mat?

You might not think you want much at all - except for it to stay put in one place, and last a long time. However, these days there are so many varieties of matting available, that a little forethought before purchasing one for your home or workplace, might maximise your convenience for some time to come.

Firstly, what about the shape? Are you assuming you are restricted to a square or rectangular option? What if, for example, you are getting a mat for the entrance to a busy reception area - have you considered an arch-shaped mat? That way, there are no corners at the furthest end from the doorway, to trip up hurrying workers and visitors.

Also related to safety, is the consideration of the backing - make sure the entrance mat will not slip or move around on the surface it is intended to sit on, whether hard flooring or carpet.

Does your entrance door open inwards or outwards? Would you prefer a thicker fabric such as coir? Might you need to arrange for your matting area to be sunk into your flooring, to avoid it catching?

Also on offer nowadays are a variety of dirt-trapping floor coverings. These can be a boon for a number of reasons.

You might have the kind of floor surface that shows every bit of dirt and grime, such as a pale carpet, or a gleaming hard floor surface. Or you might have a baby at the crawling stage, and would prefer to keep your little one's path free of debris.

Once you have established all the practicalities, bear in mind the choices available when it comes to the aesthetics of your entrance mat! For your home, you might choose a striking mat to make a striking first impression. And for your business, a mat emblazoned with your company's logo sets a professional tone from the start.
