A STEVENSTON couple’s hearts went boom when they met while working as explosives workers at ICI.

The chemistry must have been good as Robert and Janet married and 60 years later are celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary.

The couple were married in the Congregational Church in Kilwinning with Reverend William Connacher officiating.

Robert’s best man was his brother John Sturgeon and Janet’s best maid was her sister Mary Cornelius.

Blackpool was their honeymoon destination.

They went on to have five children — John, Linda, Robert, David and Colin and five grandchildren followed.

Robert worked at ICI until he retired while Janet went on to become a cook in Kerlaw School in Stevenston where she worked until she retired.

The couple still live in Stevenston — in the same house they have lived in for 52 Years.

Asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage is, Janet said: “We decided when we first got married that the key to happiness was that every time an argument was brewing, I would go into the kitchen and do some baking and Robert would go out and do some gardening.

So I ended up being a great baker and Robert ended up with a beautiful garden which made the both of us very happy.”
