Christmas is a time for reflection. Looking back over 2013 it is obvious that there has been a continuing attack on living standards for the majority of people and that times are tougher for most. The big six energy companies increased their prices again, while the Tory-led government sat idly by, failing to intervene. The Bedroom Tax has started to bite particularly for vulnerable tenants such as those with disabilities. Wages and incomes for most people have been frozen or cut, while at the same time we learn that Chief Executives are seeing huge increases in their wages and the multinationals are raking in profits but not paying any tax. As the year comes to an end we witnessed the passing of Nelson Mandela. But I do not focus on that as another negative. Instead, I draw attention to it as his life and the movement he led should be seen as an inspiration. Mandela and the people of South Africa were under the most vicious form of oppression, but the movement he led managed to overcome this and bring people of all ethnic, national and cultural backgrounds together. Politics can make a difference and that when we stand together, we can bring about change. When we enter in to 2014, it is more important than ever that people get involved and fight for a better way.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
