Youngsters from an Ardrossan primary school this week joined forces with Police Scotland to target speeding motorists.

‘Junior Road Safety Officers’ from Winton Primary School joined officers from the local Community Policing Team, Scottish Fire and Rescue and the North Ayrshire Council Community Wardens Service to monitor drivers on nearby Glasgow Street.

Drivers found to be travelling over the speed limit were spoken to at the roadside by Police officers and given the opportunity to speak with the pupils who then reinforced the road safety message.

PC Scott Murray, Campus Police Officer at Ardrossan Academy, commented: “Road safety is a top priority for Police Scotland and local communities regularly identify speeding motorists as a concern.

"Today has been great – working alongside the Junior Road Safety Officers to raise awareness on road safety and the importance of driving safely.” Lynne Gibson, Acting Principal Teacher at the school, added: “Winton Primary are keen for pupils to become active members of the local community and are keen to work alongside organisations like Police Scotland to improve the area.” During the operation on Tuesday, September 9, seven drivers were stopped with speeds in excess of 30mph – the aim was to educate drivers – they were advised of the school being in the area and the need to take extra care in residential and school areas.

The Junior Road Safety Officers are in Primary 7 at the school and play a key role in improving road safety by presenting to fellow pupils, maintaining noticeboards in the school and organising safe travel activities.

This event was held as part of the current multiagency Safe Positive Communities initiative running in the Ardrossan area.

Anyone with concerns regarding speeding vehicles or crime in local communities should contact Police Scotland by calling 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency).
