SALTCOATS' War Memorial was this week honoured by Legion Scotland as one of the Best Kept Memorials in the country.

The memorial, which was unveiled back in 1922 by the Marchioness of Aisla, has been a focal point in the town for almost a century and it has now been celebrated for its quality.

The monument and surrounding garden area was commended in the Best Kept War Memorial 2015 after a Scotland-wide review.

It received the recognition in the Large Community with Gardens Category, with the overall appearance, metalwork and lettering all praised.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “War Memorials are a vital part of our communities. They give us all a chance to remember the past and the efforts and sacrifices made by men and women.

“We can never forget them and it’s important we take pride in our war memorials as it reflects the massive sense of pride we have towards the people they represent.

“Our war memorial in Saltcoats does just that and I’m delighted that the efforts of our teams have been recognised. It is no more than they deserve.”
