FIRE Engines were on the scene within five minutes as they tackled a blaze at a hostel in Saltcoats.

Shortly after 2am on Tuesday morning, a 999 call was received and three fire engines were sent out to Green Street in Saltcoats.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and located a fire within a ground floor bedroom there and they tackled the blaze using a high pressure jet.

One man was treated for the minor effects of smoke inhalation and an ambulance was later requested and the man was taking to Crosshouse Hospital but this was due to another matter, not relating to the fire.

Checks were carried out to ensure everyone was accounted for and the last Fire Engine left the scene at 3.10am.
