FRAUDSTERS in the area are being hunted as part of a major crackdown on rogue builders.

The Protective Services team of North Ayrshire Council has recently targeted mail and telephone scammers, while Dixie the dog has been helping police sniff out crooks who are supplying illegal and potentially deadly tobacco.

The team has now joined with a host of building regulators to make sure dodgy tradesmen and builders are discovered.

The ‘Find the Builder’ service has been added to the council’s website giving people everything they need to know when it comes to choosing a builder. The site gives guidance on budgets, quotes and contracts, as well as listing all builders that are affiliated to the professional body that represents them.

Marie Burns, cabinet member for Economy and Employment, said: “Getting work done on your home can be an incredibly stressful time. The last thing you need is uncertainty. If you are unsure of the processes and what’s required then I certainly would recommend visiting the site. There are all sorts of checks and balances for you to follow that will ensure you select a reputable builder who will produce high-quality work at a competitive price. Bogus builders are opportunistwith no conscience. They pick on the most vulnerable people in our society. I am delighted we are trying to arm people with as much information as possible to ensure they don’t become victims of these unscrupulous criminals.”

Police Scotland are also carrying out street patrols to catch bogus workers on the job and are keen to work with reputable local tradespeople who help to track down bogus workers in the area. Visit http://www.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/resident/consumer-advice/finding-builder.aspx
