A ROAD safety campaigner has warned that an accident black spot on a Kilwinning road is a “death trap”.

Robert Gray says he has written to Transport Scotland as well as other officials to urge them to repair a stretch of the A737 where a car careered through the barrier last year and ploughed into the River Garnock.

Since then, Robert says the roadside near to the Dalgarven, opposite Smithstone High Farm, has never been properly repaired, and is only blocked off by a temporary barrier and a few sandbags.

Now road safety campaigner Robert says it’s only a matter of time before the “death trap” road - between Kilwinning and Dalry - claims a life.

He told the Herald: “I drive that road every day and nothing has been done to repair that bit of the road, despite the fact a car has already gone into the River Garnock.”

But Robert says, despite having written many letters to various authorities, no one seems to want to listen.

He said: “The police say it’s down to Transport Scotland who say it’s down to the council, but someone has to take responsibility here.

“If a motorist drives without a headlight or without tax or with a flat tyre or without insurance we can be fined or in some cases, even jailed.

“But it seem as if the authorities are answerable to no one”

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We can confirm that this section of the A737 is the responsibility of Transport Scotland.

“We would therefore advise the resident to progress their concerns with Transport Scotland or Scotland TranServe.”
