A SALTCOATS schoolboy has had a life changing experience after appearing on a TV show for young people created by renowned explorer Bear Grylls.

Adam Callander, 15, who is a pupil at St Matthew’s Academy, is a star on Bear Grylls’ Survival School which airs on Sunday mornings at 8.30am on ITV and CITV.

Adam explained how he managed to get involved with the show, he said: “I was on holiday visiting my Nana in Suffolk when my mum saw an advert on TV, which featured Bear Grylls inviting 12-15 year olds to apply for an adventure of a lifetime.

“I filled out the application form online but didn’t really expect to hear anything.

“I was then asked to take part in a conversation with ITV, followed by some team building activities and an interview in Newcastle.

“About a week later, I got another call from ITV inviting me to take part in this excellent experience.

“My mum and dad dropped me off in Chester and then it was up to me to fend for myself with no technology for two weeks!”

He described taking part in the show as ‘life-changing’ and what it was like to meet the intrepid explorer and TV star.

Adam added: “It was life changing! Words can’t really describe how amazing it was being out in the wild for two weeks.

“It was extremely hard work, particularly when it was cold and wet, but I enjoyed every second of it and I’m finding it quite difficult now that it’s over. I’ve made friends for life with the other contestants and I’m looking forward to meeting up with them all in February!

“Meeting Bear Grylls was absolutely amazing! I’ve watched Bear Grylls on TV for years and have always been inspired by him.

“To watch him land in front of us and then to spend time in the wild with him and his brilliant team was something that I’ll never forget.

“He shared stories about his expeditions and some funny stories too. He supported us all through some very tricky tasks and managed to push us to achieve our very best.

“He said some extremely motivational things to me during this experience.

“I’m now inspired to pursue a career in the outdoors!”

The show is continuing on Sunday mornings and his family and friends have been glued to their screens.

Adam added: “My family have been blown away by the activities that I participated in. I’ve managed to keep almost everything a secret so it’s a surprise for everyone who watches it each week.

“They’re looking forward to seeing the next episodes. I think they’re proud of what I’ve managed to achieve and for giving 100 per cent to everything I tried.

“My friends have been really supportive and are enjoying watching the show.”

The school pupil now hopes to pursue a career relating to the show.

He said: “Since finishing this experience, I applied and interviewed for a Modern Apprenticeship as an instructor in Outdoor Education on Arran.

“I wasn’t successful on this occasion but I would love to pursue a career in the outdoors in the future.

“The experience has proven that I can do anything I set my mind to and has given me

confidence to follow my dreams.”
