THREE SHELTERED Housing complexes in North Ayrshire are to be boosted by an £11million investment over the next two years.

Canal Court in Saltcoats as well as Afton and Caley Court in Stevenston are all included in the plans which will see the Saltcoats site demolished to bring the standard of housing up to the standard expected in the 21st Century.

This news comes after it was announced that George Aitken Court in Ardrossan is to receive a boost of £440,000 for upgrades.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council, said: “As part of our Sheltered Housing re-provisioning Programme, we are set to embark on an ambitious project that will see over £11million invested in the Three Towns area to provide high quality, affordable homes for older people.

“This investment will see the current sheltered housing units at Canal Court in Saltcoats along with Afton and Caley Court in Stevenston replaced with two brand new complexes which have been specifically designed for 21st century living.

“As part of these works, Canal Court will be demolished to make way for a state-of-the-art facility that will become the flagship for sheltered housing in North Ayrshire.

“Consisting of 36 one and two bedroom homes, the new units at Canal Court will also incorporate a ‘hub’ area which residents and older people from the wider community can use to participate in activities such as coffee mornings, lunch clubs and games.

“The project will also see a new unit erected at the site of Glencairn House in Stevenston which will replace both Afton and Caley Court.

“The facility will provide 28 fully-accessible one and two bedroom homes, a communal lounge, secure landscaped courtyard, a visitors’ room and scooter store.

“Our Housing Services Team has consulted with current residents over the plans in order to determine their individual needs. Staff are supporting tenants in their move to alternative accommodation and all tenants will have the option to move back into the new units once they are complete.

“Works will begin at the end of this year and are scheduled for completion by April 2018.”
