TWO North Ayrshire dads are walking 50 miles in one day in memory of one of their daughters, who sadly took her life at the age of just 13.

Kenny Moriarty from Saltcoats and Robert McGilvery from Irvine are fundraising for the Young Minds Trust, a young person’s mental health charity, in honour of Kenny’s late daughter Jenna, who passed away in 2013.

In their ‘Miles for Minds’ challenge, Kenny, 47, and 48-year-old Robert will trek through North Ayrshire on Saturday, May 28 visiting as many major towns and villages along the way.

Kenny, who works in the IT department of East Ayrshire Council, told the Herald: “I’ve got a memorial page on Facebook that I post little stories to every week. It keeps Jenna’s memory alive. It’s lovely seeing other people share nice memories about her.

“The walk is all about raising awareness and vital funds for Young Minds, who are committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. It’s a charity that’s close to our hearts.”

Starting from Skelmorlie, Kenny and Robert will walk to Largs, Kilbirnie, Beith, Dalry, West Kilbride, Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, Springside, Dreghorn, and Irvine, before finishing at the Gailes Hotel. They anticipate the trek to take them around 20 hours.

The pair will be joined by family, friends and local dignitaries at various stages along the route.

Kenny said: “Robert works for North Ayrshire Council so he thought that walking through North Ayrshire would be a good idea.

“We’re trying to visit as many communities in North Ayrshire as we can. The walk will begin at 2am, initially walking through the night in the dark using head-torches. Then we will continue walking through the day.

“We’re hoping we can get family and friends to join us at various stages along the way to come and see us and cheer us on.

“My wife Wilma and Robert’s wife Karen will be driving with us and handing us fresh socks and sandwiches.

“We’ve been doing some training for the walk. Just on Saturday there we did 32 miles and we were both exhausted. Thinking of adding 20 miles on top of that is quite daunting. The legs are really feeling it!”

Kenny and Robert have taken part in several fundraisers in memory of Jenna over the last three years. Last year, the pair led a team on a 55 mile bike ride around Arran. Kenny also took part in a ‘Marcothon’ at the end of 2015, where he ran a minimum of three miles a day all through December.

The 47-year-old said that he hoped the current challenge would take the total amount raised for Young Minds in memory of his daughter in excess of £25,000.

Kenny said: “People donating is really motivating us. The support is overwhelming. Everyone has been brilliant and so kind.”
