THE Scottish Parliamentary Election is barely over – and attention now turns to the big vote on the future of the UK in Europe.

People across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland will vote on June 23 to determine if the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union.

And those in North Ayrshire wanting to have their say in the Referendum should ensure they are eligible to vote.

If you were registered to vote in the Scottish Parliamentary Election, you are likely to be eligible to vote in the EU Referendum.

However, if your details change between May 5 and June 23 – for example, you have moved house – you will need to ensure your details are properly updated.

Similarly, if you did not register in time to vote for the May 5 election, you should take the opportunity now to ensure you can have a say in the Referendum.

Counting Officer for North Ayrshire Elma Murray said: “The vote on the future of the UK is one which affects all of us.

“No one should miss out on their entitlement to vote or the opportunity to make their voice heard in this Referendum.

“Ensuring your name is on the Electoral Register is a straightforward and quick process.

“Simply go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote where registration takes about five minutes.”

The Referendum will be held on June 23 and voters will be asked: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”

Voters can answer with an X against either: “Remain a member of the European Union” or “Leave the European Union”.

Residents have until June 7 to register in time to vote in the Referendum while those applying for a postal vote have until 5pm on June 8

The deadline for proxy applications is 5pm on June 15.

If you have recently moved address or your details have changed (e.g. you have got married) then you will need to update your details on the Electoral Register.

People can check they are registered by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by contacting the Ayrshire Valuation Joint Board, 9 Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1HL, on 01292 612221.
