A COMMUNITY centre has hit out after fears a funfair set to come to Ardrossan could affect the work they do in the community.

The committee of the Ardrossan Whitlees Community Centre have submitted a petition to North Ayrshire Council after it was revealed that a funfair could set up shop in the park at Central Avenue, just yards from the centre and on the same weekend when Ardrossan Winton Rovers hold their popular fete and fun day.

The centre called on locals to back their appeal as they said it would threaten fundraising for their popular events such as their fireworks display and their Christmas pantomimes and they quickly mustered around 300 signatures.

The committee say that they are not opposed to a fair coming to the town but to the fact that it is being held in such close proximity to their land.

In a post on their Facebook page, the community centre said: “We are not against fairgrounds in general but we strive as an Association to put on events that benefit the community and all money raised goes back into the community unlike commercial ventures which keeps all monies raised.”

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “The Council has received an application for a Temporary Public Entertainment Fairground or Circus Licence for Whitlees Park for the period Thursday, May 26 to Monday, May 30. This will be considered by the Licensing Committee. We have received the petition.”
