TWO members of North Ayrshire Athletics Club, Community Coach Lesley Lynn and Senior Club runner Alan Kerr recently completed the Transvulcania Ultra Marathon.

This race takes place on La Palma, also known as San Miguel de La Palma, the most north-westerly island of the Canary Islands, Spain and the race attracts the participation of many international runners.

Transvulcania is rightly described as the Race of Race, considered the hardest mountain-ultramarathon in the Canary Islands and one of the most important in Spain.

The route begins at Faro de Fuencaliente and continues through the ‘Gran Recorrido’ trail, also known as ‘Ruta del Bastón’, until Puerto de Tazacorte. It connects with the Camino Real de la Costa, until the finish line, located in Plaza de España – Los Llanos de Aridane. Without any doubt, Transvulcania is one of the toughest trail running races in the world. The total route is 73.3 km (45.5 miles) with a cumulative elevation gain of 4,415 meters, and elevation loss of 4,110m.

From sea level, the course climbs to Roque de los Muchachos (2421 m.), the highest point on the Island, then descends to Tazacorte and ends in Los Llanos de Aridane where the finish line is surrounded by an amazing environment.

Lesley completed this Ultra Marathon in 13:57:29 and Alan achieved a time of 15:04:15.

Lesley and Alan were raising money for wounded Royal Marines as part of Team Erskine.
