FIREFIGHTERS were once again forced to tackle 30 metres of grass fire in Stevenston at the former ICI site.

Crews were called at around 8.45pm on Sunday, May 15 to reports of trees on fire near the road at Stevenston.

Firefighters from Kilwinning reached the scene in less than six minutes and found the grass on fire.

They requested additional resources and two fire vehicles were sent from Ardrossan.

Crews used beaters to extinguish the flames and they made good progress in bringing the fire under control before being withdrawn with the onset of darkness.

They left the scene at around 10.05pm.

But the fire crews had to return to the site on Monday night, after more fires were reported at the former ICI site.

A Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told the Herald: “We were called at 7pm to grass on fire close to the ICI building and one appliance from Kilwinning attended. They used beaters to extinguish the fire.

“We were also called at 8.40pm to trees on fire and the Kilwinning attended that incident as well.”

Other fires were tackled at the site last month.
