A MAN who injured his friend in a drunken car crash is awaiting sentencing.

Adam Anderson, 20, was begged to stop driving by his friends before crashing a car in Saltcoats’ Union Street on January 23

A woman required hospital treatment as a result of Anderson’s reckless behaviour.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard last week how Anderson and his friends had been in his grandfather’s house drinking on January 22.

The following day at around 1.30pm, Anderson took his friends out to sit in the car.

Fiscal depute Mhairi Mair said he was initially going to show them something before suddenly “driving off at speed” without warning.

Anderson drove between Guthrie Road and Union Street while his friends pleaded with him to stop.

They were well aware Anderson was under the influence and did not have a valid driving licence.

But he continued to drive and as he turned into Union Street, Anderson, who is now living in Glasgow, lost control of the car and crashed into a large boulder.

This caused “extensive damage” to the car and a female passenger was injured following the crash.

Paramedics were called to assist her and police were also contacted by ambulance crews due to the nature of the crash.

Police found several men and women standing next to the vehicle with the injured woman lying down on the pavement being treated by medics.

Anderson freely stated to officers: “I crashed the car, I’ve been drinking.”

He was taken to Saltcoats Police Office but as he could not provide a breath sample, a blood test was carried out before being held in custody.

The injured woman suffered bruising to her head and neck but was allowed to return home after being given medication by staff at Crosshouse Hospital.

Anderson pleaded guilty to the offences at court last week.

Defence solicitor Fraser Alexander said he would reserve comments until a social work report had been completed but revealed Anderson has never held - nor applied for - a driving licence.

Presiding Sheriff Brian Murphy deferred sentence until July and disqualified Anderson from driving in the interim.
