A SALTCOATS mum who lost her little boy to a rare childhood cancer is climbing the UK’s three highest peaks in just one day for charity.

Four-year-old Daniel Gilmour lost his battle with neuroblastoma three years ago. Since then, his parents, Fiona McGill and Paul Gilmour, have pledged to raise as much money as possible to help beat the disease.

The couple have raised over £30,000 for cancer charities so far and in their latest fundraiser, Fiona is taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge.

Fiona said: “Since losing our son Daniel, aged four, in April of 2013, to the rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, we have made it our mission to raise awareness and support finding a cure for this awful disease.

“Since Daniel became unwell in February 2012 we have raised around £30,000 for charities.

“We are now focusing our attentions on The Neuroblastoma Society, who support research into new cancer treatments and ultimately a cure, and Calum’s Cabin, who provide free respite holidays on the Isle of Bute for families of young children affected by cancer. ”

As part of the Three Peaks Challenge, Fiona and a group of friends will climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike in the Lake District, and Mount Snowdon in Wales, all in just 24 hours.

Fiona said: “There’s 10 of us doing it and we’ve all been training quite hard. Paul’s going to be driving the minibus for us, where we’ll sleep and eat and travel between the three mountains. It’s all friends and colleagues who are doing this.”
