NORTH Ayrshire Provost Joan Sturgeon last week paid tribute to those affected by the terror attack in the French city of Nice.

Flags on council buildings flew at half mast on Friday in memory of the 84 killed when a lorry plunged through a crowd gathering to mark Bastille Day.

Provost Sturgeon said: “The horrific attack in Nice was as senseless as it is shocking.

“Our first thoughts go to the victims, their families and the people of Nice.

“They had gathered together in celebration of the French values of liberty, equality and fraternity on Bastille Day. It should have been an occasion of joy but turned to tragedy.

“We have strong links with France here in North Ayrshire – Irvine is twinned with Voisins-le-Bretonneux, while Largs is twinned with Andernos-les-Bains - and we offer our support, condolences and continued friendship as we stand united with them at this terrible time.”
