TEENAGERS from a Three Towns dance school are celebrating after winning their first ever major competition.

Compulsion, a team from Street Beatz Dance Crew, performed at Starlight Stage Festival in Dundee on Saturday, August 6. The team of eight girls, aged 12-19, came out top in the Street and Commercial section at the event.

Nicola Kane, dance teacher at Street Beatz, told the Herald: “It was brilliant. We had always talked about competing but they’ve always been a bit nervous. I said to them we should just try it this year – give it a bash and see. We couldn’t believe it when we won!

“The girls were absolutely ecstatic. They never stopped talking about it all the way back from Dundee. More than anything, it’s given them a massive boost. Obviously as their dance teacher I’m going to say they’re good but for a stranger to give them all that praise is a different thing.

“Our overall score was 189 out of 200. We can’t believe it. They totally smashed it. The head judge said she was going to give us a list of all the upcoming competitions so we’re hoping to be back out there competing as soon as possible. They’ve now got the bug for it and can’t wait to compete again.”

Street Beatz’s recent competition triumph is the latest in a series of successes for the Saltcoats dance school over the last few months. Earlier in the year, the Herald reported that the competition team had been selected to perform at Disneyland Paris. Now, Street Beatz are delighted to move into brand new premises at Rennie Business Units in Saltcoats.

Nicola said: “Our new studio’s opened as well so it’s all very exciting. The one in Green Street was just too cramped. This one’s got much more space so we can do more. The girls are absolutely over the moon.”

As a final push to raise money for their Disneyland dream, Street Beatz are holding a coffee morning this Saturday, August 13 from 11am-1pm in Whitlees Community Centre, Ardrossan. Entry is £1 and includes a free tea or coffee.
