A MAN is facing a lengthy jail sentence after being convicted of raping a woman in a house in Stevenston.

Thomas Sanders, 50, was convicted of raping his victim on December 21, 2014 after attempting to kiss her and seizing her by her neck.

Sanders, who was represented by advocate Jennifer Bain, was cleared of two other rapes against the same woman.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, alleged that Sanders had raped her on February 28 and June 14, 2010. The jury found these two rape charges not proven.

Miss Bain said of Sanders: “He fully accepts he is facing a custodial sentence and a substantial one at that.”

Prosecutor Jonathan Brodie told the court that Sanders only had a conviction for breach of the peace in 2009.

Judge Lord Beckett told Sanders: “You have been found guilty of rape. It is appropriate that you are remanded in custody.”

Sanders was placed on the sex offender's register.

He will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh next month.
