CREATIVE pupils from St Matthew’s Academy made memory boxes for the residents at Arran View Care Home in Saltcoats.

The  S4 students created five boxes as part of the Skills Academy programme, an initiative aimed at providing experiences to enhance career management skills and links learning directly to the world of work.

The students gave a short presentation about the memory boxes to the Arran View residents and took part in a reminiscence group with them.

Catherine Gibb, Arran View Activities Coordinator, told the Herald: “They took it upon their own initiative to make memory boxes for the residents in the home for them to reminisce, which was really nice. The boxes look really good.”

During the Skills Academy programme, the pupils looked at health issues in the local community as part of the SQA National 4 Health Awareness Unit.

They learned how memory boxes can help people recall fond memories and links with their past.

They then developed their team working and employability skills whilst working together to make the wooden boxes, assisted by staff from the Technical Department.

Margaret Morran and Pamela Young, Pupil Support at St Matthew’s Academy, both said: “Many thanks to staff and residents from Arran View Care Home as well as staff from the Academy.”
