A KILWINNING joiner has been named Apprentice of the Year at one of the UK’s most prestigious awards ceremonies.

Adam Cairney was awarded for his excellent work at this year’s APSE National Housing and Building Apprentice of the Year Awards in Leeds last week.

He won the ‘building skills’ category and has just recently secured a permanent position with North Ayrshire Council’s Building Services as a result of his exceptional work ethic and commitment to excellence.

The apprentice awards are designed to formally recognise future tradespeople and local authorities who continually provide first class training and employment initiatives.

A delighted Adam said afterwards: “My dad and big brother are both joiners and there was never any doubt that I would become one too.

“They’re so happy that I won this award on my own merit – so am I although I still can’t believe it!”

Cabinet Member for Place, Councillor Jim Montgomerie is delighted with Adam’s achievement.

He added: “Adam has demonstrated a tremendous attitude and dedication to his chosen career and should serve as an example to other apprentices across the UK.

“The council is committed to investing in its future workforce and this award reflects that commitment.”

Councillor Montgomerie said: “Our training and development programmes are designed to give our trainees the best experience and exposure to a range of skills and opportunities and to ensure we are always on track to attract and retain talent.”

NAC Chief Executive, Elma Murray, said: “Adam was up against a talented pool of trainees from across the UK and this calibre of candidates only demonstrates the magnitude of his achievement.

“The council is made up of dedicated, creative and inspired staff who deliver excellent services to North Ayrshire’s communities and Adam is a welcome addition to this fantastic workforce.”
