A PARENT of a child at St Matthew’s Academy has hit out after the drug scandal that rocked the school last week.

The mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, has a child in the same year of the 12-year-old girl who was taken to hospital and hopes that something can be done to make sure steps are taken to educate kids about the dangers of drugs.

She said: “I found out and went on to Facebook and messaged other parents and some parents at Ardrossan Academy to let them know.

“Some of them knew, some of them didn’t but it came to a shock to the lot of them. Parents should be made aware of things like this, especially when their children are in the same year as those involved.

“The school wouldn’t talk to me and couldn’t confirm what happened. What is being done to make sure my child is safe?”

The Herald exclusively revealed last week how two pupils were taken to Crosshouse Hospital after allegedly taking drugs in the school.

The mum added: “I’ve told my child not to accept anything and was told that the council would be sending letters out to parents about the incident.

“It wouldn’t put me off sending my children to the school as I think it’s the best of a bad bunch but it did make me think twice. The parents should have been informed.”

North Ayrshire Council said that they don’t plan on sending any letters on specific incidents but released a statement and a North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We regularly drive home the message about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and substance abuse in all of our schools through the Health and Wellbeing part of our curriculum.

“In addition, our teachers will continue to work alongside our colleagues in Police Scotland to ensure that pupils are educated on the dangers associated with substance misuse.”
