NORTH Ayrshire Council is the first local authority in Scotland to have a Family Business Advisor as part of its Business Growth team.

Business Growth Manager Anne Blacklock passed with distinction the STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising.

The specialist qualification focuses on the key aspects of family business advice and is delivered through a variety of distance learning and workshops led by industry experts.

In 2012, only 12 per cent of family owned businesses were passed down to 2nd generation members and only 7 per cent of family owned SME’s had been in the family for three generations or more. The council recognises the importance of supporting family businesses to help achieve a more sustainable economy for our communities.

Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “One of our key priorities is to provide the best conditions for businesses, creating a diverse and inclusive economy. We want to create an environment in which business can thrive – this is key to improve North Ayrshire’s economy.

“The majority of businesses in North Ayrshire have a family component to them and they are vital for the future prosperity of the area. By having a fully qualified Family Business Advisor within the council we can more fully engage with and support our family run firms and help them to manage potential issues while recognising the long term opportunities.”

Anne said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with our family business clients to support these businesses to transition their success for future generations.”
