THE Three Towns community came together on Saturday to spread the word about the Save Our Ferry campaign – and maintain the momentum behind the grass roots push to keep the Arran and Kintyre ferries in Ardrossan.

Local campaign volunteers chatted with weekend shoppers at ASDA’s Ardrossan branch to update them on the drive to ‘Keep it Ardossan to Brodick’ and encourage them to sign up to the online Save Our Ferry petition or sign a letter to Scottish Government Transport Minister Humza Yousaf.

Save Our Ferry volunteer Frances Rennie was delighted with the response from the public.

She said: “The stall went very well, and later I saw that we gained 30 new likes on our Keep it A to B Facebook campaign page, so folk are really getting behind it.”

Elected representatives from the Three Towns wards put aside their political differences in a cross-party display of unity.

Council Leader Joe Cullinane said: “It was great to see so many people on the Save our Ferry stall today. I’d like to thank them all for giving up their time and also thank local people for getting behind the campaign.

“It shows very clearly that Save Our Ferry is not about politicians and political parties.”

Former leader of the SNP Group, and Councillor for Saltcoats and Stevenston, Willie Gibson agreed. He said: “It’s clear from the response from everyone I have spoken to today the level of support from the community is very strong and it’s humbling to see the affection and passion people – both young and not so young – have for Ardrossan.”

Independent Councillor for Arran & Ardrossan John Hunter added: “Almost everyone who stopped to talk to us has heard about the campaign and close on 100 per cent feel sure the transport ministers will come down in favour of Ardrossan, though as we know the decision is with Mr Yousaf. But I have to say after what I’ve seen today I am feeling very optimistic.”
