A SALTCOATS dad who fell ill after eating a biscuit from Asda that was nearly six months out of date says that a £30 voucher offered to him by the store is not enough in compensation.

Paul Connelly bought the packet of Belvita Yogurt Crunch from Asda Ardrossan a couple of weeks ago and was shocked to find, after eating one, that the pack was dated August 26.

The 39-year-old said: “I had one in the morning then I was ill with severe stomach cramps.

“To make it worse it was yoghurt crunch ones and that’s a dairy product.”

Paul went to the store to complain but was unsatisfied with the compensation offered.

He said: “Asda had the cheek to hit me with a £5 voucher.

“I phoned head office and they said they would send me out a £30 voucher but that was nearly a fortnight ago and I’ve not heard anything.

“I’m not happy. I would have thought they would have offered me something more, like about £50 or £60, because I ended up not well.

“I’m not happy with the way we’ve been treated. A shop that size shouldn’t get away with selling out of date products.”

A spokesperson from Asda said: “We take complaints of this nature seriously and have tight processes in place to avoid such incidents.

“Unfortunately on this occasion it seems we didn’t meet our own high standards and we have moved quickly to rectify this.

“Customers can be reassured that our Ardrossan store has carried out a number of extra checks and can confirm that this was an isolated incident.

“We’ve spoken to Mr Connelly to apologise and have offered a gesture of goodwill to go some way towards making up for any inconvenience caused.”
