A RAILWAY bridge over a busy Stevenston bypass is crumbling and could collapse with the weight of trains, a local granddad fears.

William Devine from Saltcoats worries that the bridge over the A78 along from Morrison’s is dangerous and is “ready to go”.

The 56-year-old told the Herald: “I was down walking the dog in the Blacklands when I was looking at the big concrete pillars.

“It’s scary because it’s falling to bits. The weight of the structure is pushing it down and it’s ready to go. It’s going to collapse.

“It’s in that bad disrepair the bloody thing’s going to come down.

“I see that they’ve tried to patch bits up a few years ago but it’s got to the stage where the structure is just not sound. It’s a wonder they don’t check it yearly.

“The trains go across it and they carry some weight so it’s really scary. I’m feart every time I drive under it in case it falls down. I try to go a different way if I can.”

According to Network Rail, the bridge is structurally sound, although there are plans to undertake some cosmetic works to it sometime in the future.

A spokesperson from Network Rail said: “All of our bridges receive an annual inspection and this structure was last checked in September 2016. There are no structural issues with the bridge.”
