CAN you help identify the serviceman who was flown in to bagpipe at the top of Arran’s highest peak?

Back in 1987, Geoff McLeavy was on holiday in the local area and decided to climb Goatfell.

As he reached the summit, so did an RAF helicopter.

He explained: “While on a cycling holiday around Islay and Arran in July 1987, I detoured to climb Goatfell.

“While on the summit an RAF helicopter landed briefly to drop off (if memory serves me well) a chap from the US armed services.

“He was coming to the end of his tour and had always wished to play the bagpipes on top of the mountain.

“His fellow colleagues duly obliged, he stayed for a few minutes before boarding the helicopter and returning to base.

“I am not sure of the gentleman’s name, but perhaps some of your readers may recollect such an occasion.”
