THE search is on for more details surrounding a postcard depicting Ardrossan Castle.

Given to the Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society from their colleagues of the Isle of Cumbrae Heritage Society, the scene on the 1904 momento shows Ardrossan’s Castle and other structures near to the current railway line.

A spokesperson for the society said: “The scene depicts a view of the ruins of the Red Keep and kitchen vault, as well as three structures that are no longer present at the Castle.

“1. The old railway-line signal box and lights, heading towards Ardrossan Town train station.

“2.The Red Keep looks to have some kind of fence or additional building around it.

“3. To the right of this, behind the tree line sits a strange structure.

“The view today would include the railway bridge leading to Winton Court at the base of Castle Hill.”

The postcard was sent by ‘Rita’, to her Father; a Mr J. Jack of Kirkstyle, New Monkland, Airdrie.

It is date stamped 4.45pm, March 15, 1904 and was sent with an Edward VII halfpenny stamp.

The postcard reads:

“Dear Father, We are enjoying ourselves very much. We won’t be home till Saturday. Rita”

The Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society added: “We’d love to explore this further.

“What was the mysterious structure to the right? Is there a piece of the castle missing, or was there a fence around the Red Keep?

“When were the railway signals taken away?

“Who was Rita (Jack?), possibly from Airdrie? Did she have a good holiday in Ardrossan and how was the weather?”
