NEW digital information screens are to be rolled out at railway stations across the country following a successful trial which included Saltcoats.

According to Scotrail, the new information screens are brighter, clearer, and also show real-time data for connecting transport.

The new digital customer information (DCI) screens were fitted at Saltcoats Railway Station in 2015.

The town’s station was the only site in Ayrshire that was used to test the DCI screens as Scotrail wanted to check how the screens would react in the coastal conditions in this area.

A total of 94 new DCI screens are being rolled out to 29 stations across Scotland by the ScotRail Alliance, and many will also display nearby bus, ferry or flight information as well as train times.

In addition, better, more detailed information during disruption to train services will be available, thanks to the ability to display images and video on the HD displays.

Only text and basic diagrams can be shown on traditional ‘dot-matrix’ signs.

A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said: “These new screens give our customers a greater amount of clearer and more detailed information, including onward travel options. The trial screen in Saltcoats has resulted in more of these digital screens being rolled out at other stations across our network.”

The new displays are part of ongoing investment to improve Scotland’s stations. Last month 100 new electric car charging spaces, and over 40 new station shelters were announced by the ScotRail Alliance.

Ian McConnell, the ScotRail Alliance’s programmes and transformation director, said: “We’re working hard to improve and renew stations across our network.

“Customer information is hugely important, and the more detail - the better.

“Our aim has always been to make to support environmentally-friendly travel across Scotland, well beyond the end of the railway tracks.”
