PUPILS from James Reid School in Saltcoats managed to raise almost £300 through a toy sale for The Mission to Seafarers.

The charity supports six British veterans who are currently imprisoned in India and class teacher Eilidh Watson wants to help raise as much awareness as possible.

The toy sale took place before the summer break and most of the items had sold by lunchtime, with just one game left, a few small toys, books, console games and DVDs.

The class, Middle Phase B, which has ninee pupils who each contributed using their own strengths and interests, wanted to, “do something that helps others who don’t have much” (Reece, nine and Declan, 10), so they thought it would be a good idea to revisit Barnardo’s Children’s Shop in Irvine to donate it to them, as a way of thanking Doreen the manager for her time on their class visit and, “helping us to think about where the toys should go in our sale” (Nicola, aged nine) and they donated the excess to the shop.

The charity and the plight of the six veterans has also been raised with Patricia Gibson MP. In total the class raised £280 and this will be given to the charity in support of the men.

The kids also wrote letters and drew pictures of support for them.

The petition in support of the men has recently passed 400,000 signatures and the Just Giving Page is fast approaching £50,000.
