A FUN day taking place within the garden of a Saltcoats pensioner was a huge success and raised £200 for Cancer Research.

Eve Stenhouse wanted to support the charity after several members of her family were diagnosed with cancer.

As the Herald reported previously, the 81-year-old lost her father to the disease and has seen her step-grandson, sister, and son-in-law all receive treatment for it.

Eve, whose hobby is maintaining her beautiful back door area at Christie Gardens, opened her gates to the public last weekend.

Over 20 people turned up to the event, including North Ayrshire Provost Ian Clarkson.

Eve described the day as “absolutely fabulous”.

She added: “I would like to thank Eileen Walker, my right-hand woman. I really can’t thank her enough. Also thanks to the Canon family – Mrs Margaret Canon, her son John and his wife Lynn and their children Liam and Aiden – and for the photographer for coming too.

“The provost was brilliant. He was supposed to be there for two minutes but he actually stayed for two hours and said that he met so many interesting people.

“He wrote in my wee book. I had a guest book for people to write in and a lot of nice things were put in it.”

Herald freelance photographer John Keachie was there to capture the fun.
