ARDROSSAN tattie farmer Alexander Wilson celebrated 130 years of his family growing delicious potatoes with an event at Tesco.

The 37-year-old was welcomed by Russell Houston, store manager at Tesco Irvine Riverway Extra, as he delivered his spuds to customers in store.

The link-up shows the supermarket’s commitment to local, family businesses and to providing customers with good quality Scottish produce.

Russell said: “Ayrshire new potatoes are regarded as some of the best in the world and are known for their light earthy flavour and melt-in-the-mouth texture.

“Alexander’s family’s tatties have been part of Scottish meal-times for generations and we are incredibly proud to help him continue that long and historic association.

“It’s so important for us to work with local brands and businesses, forming strong links with family run operations at the centre of their communities. We work hard to serve customers and our local suppliers are a great way of helping us do this.”

Alexander’s great grandfather Thomas signed the lease on Low Boydston Farm in 1887. Alexander now runs the business with mum Irene and dad Sandy.

The stunning property overlooks the Isle of Arran, with many of the potatoes grown in mineral rich soil just metres from the shore-line.

Alexander said: “The warm air and sandy soil of Low Boydston Farm has allowed generations of our family to grow early Ayrshire new potatoes.

“In the 1900s our tatties were loaded onto steam trains destined for the busy markets of Glasgow and Newcastle. Today they are an iconic seasonal favourite in Tesco stores across Scotland.”

The Wilson’s potatoes are delivered in partnership with Greenvale AP and are available in selected stores across Scotland.
