A GROUP of volunteers have secured funding to resume a youth café after the summer holidays following a trial run.

West Kilbride Youth Café will return for at least eight sessions after receiving cash from the Community Trust.

The café was started earlier in the year by local volunteers who wanted to provide a safe place for young people to hang out and chill with friends, listen to music, and enjoy some refreshments.

Kerry Long, one of the volunteer organisers of the café, said: “The whole idea came about because young people said that they wanted somewhere to go at night.

“It’s not so much a structured youth club where we’re running activities – though if the young people want that then we can organise that. It’s just a safe space where young people can go at night. There’s no pressure to take part in anything.

“Initially it was for ages S4-S6 but there weren’t enough and there were younger people wanting to come so we lowered it to S1-S6 but that was putting off the older kids so we decided to make it S3-S6.

“It was coming along but it was really quiet – it was pretty low numbers – so we want to get the message out.”

West Kilbride Youth Café will meet in the Barony Centre every Friday from September 1 from 7.30-9.30pm and will run for eight weeks (excluding the September weekend). Entry is free.
