A CHILDREN’S Panel member from Kilbirnie has helped launch the search for new panel members in North Ayrshire.

James Smith has spoken of how rewarding the unique volunteering role can be, having been a panel member for two years.

The national Children’s Panel is Scotland’s largest lay tribunal and improves outcomes for vulnerable children and young people who are in need of care and protection or who have offended.

James, 40, decided to become a panel member to help and support young people and families in his community.

He said: “I’ve been a foster carer for over 10 years and when myself and my partner adopted a child, I decided to look into the Children’s Hearings System and think about becoming a member so that I could lend my support to children who hadn’t been as lucky as the kids I’ve dealt with.

“Being both a foster carer and a panel member has allowed me to deal with a lot of vulnerable children which can be difficult, but to be able to give a child who has not been listened to a voice is so rewarding. If a small amount of my time could help save a child or young person from potential harm then the Children’s Panel is definitely worth it.

“I would tell anyone who was considering joining the Children’s Panel to go for it. We need people who want to make a difference and help improve the lives of young people.

“You have to be committed as you are making very important decisions on the welfare of children but it is a privilege to be allowed into people’s lives to try to help whilst they are going through a difficult time.”

There are currently over 2,500 volunteer panel members across Scotland, however new recruits from a range of backgrounds are needed each year to ensure the system continues to offer the best support.

This year, Children’s Hearings Scotland is also keen to hear from those interested in supporting the work of the panel through becoming a volunteer Area Support Team member.

An information evening will be held on September 12 at Greenwood Conference Centre in Dreghorn at 7pm for those interested in meeting existing panel members and finding out more about the role.

Applicants need to be 18 or over. The deadline for applications is September 26. To find out more about becoming a panel member, or to apply online, visit www.childrenspanelscotland.org.
