MORE than 30 new recruits were welcomed by North Ayrshire Council last week as part of an ambitious programme designed to give local youngsters an opportunity to kick-start their careers.

The first of five Modern Apprentice (MA) inductions sessions was held last week to formally welcome 34 of the council’s newest recruits as they embark on their MA journey.

It forms part of a wider programme which over the next couple of months will see 96 local young people taking up posts in various services across the council.

The council has made a commitment to providing up to 250 new MA positions over three years. Each of the youngsters, all aged from 16-19, will be allocated a ‘buddy’ – a member of staff at the council – who will support and guide them as they settle in to their apprenticeship.

Councillor Alex Gallagher joined the first group of new recruits on Monday at Greenwood Conference Centre. He said: “It was great to see so many young faces gearing up for their first step onto the career ladder.

“Offering young people positive opportunities to build their skills and work experience is something we take very seriously as a council. After all, they are our future workforce. So we must do what we can to prepare them for a successful and prosperous future. And a Modern Apprenticeship is a great way for them to do exactly that.

“We wish all of our new apprentices the very best of luck as they start their journey in the work-place.”

Mackenzie Hollis from Irvine, was one of the 34 youngsters joining the council on Monday.

Mackenzie, 17, will be taking up a position with the Youth Services Team. She said: “I can’t wait to get started. It’s such a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and gain that all-important experience that employers look for.

“I’ve always wanted to work with children in some capacity. I can’t wait to get started!”
