STAFF and pupils at James Reid School were shocked to find their building flooded after last weekend’s heavy rain.

The Herald’s photographer, Charlie Gilmour, witnessed the flooding first-hand when he arrived at the school on Monday, August 28 to take pictures of the pupils with their exam certificates.

According to North Ayrshire Council, water seeped in under the door following torrential rain and was not a result of any structural problems with the building.

Water damage is thought to be minimal and classes have not been affected, with the school day continuing on as normal.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “James Reid School experienced some minor flooding issues following on from the heavy rain at the weekend.

“At the moment, it appears damage is confined to carpets in a small number of offices.

“Council staff helped remove the water using specialist equipment and we have also brought in dehumidifiers to help remove excess water from the rooms affected.

“Once these have fully dried out, we will consider whether or not the carpets need replaced.

“To help minimise the chances of further flooding, sandbags have been made available.

“Lessons remained unaffected and the school is continuing to operate as normal.”
