THE Titan Crane in Clydebank became the focal point for a charity abseil on Sunday, September 10 to raise funds for Ardrossan’s Barony St. John Centre and their personal safety classes for the blind.

The Scottish Centre for Personal Safety provides free weekly personal safety courses for anyone with a visual impairment and nine supporters of the charity took part in a sponsored abseil event to help raise some much needed funds for the repair of the Barony St John’s skylight windows and for the on going provision of the free training they offer.

Volunteer Manager of the charity, Alan Bell commented: “We had been looking for a way to raise funds for some essential repair work and to help pay for the weekly classes which we offer free of charge to people who are registered blind or have a visual impairment. The abseil event seemed like a good idea – until you are standing looking down from the 150ft edge of the crane.”

Three registered blind supporters of the charity also took part including Ardrossan resident Norma Baillie who added: “We all had a great day and despite the heavy rain and wind there was a great atmosphere. In total we have raised well over a £1,000 for the charity which means they will be able to continue offering free weekly courses which is fantastic news.”

If you are blind or visually impaired, the Barony St. John Centre offers a free personal safety/self defence course every Thursday from 11am-12.15pm
