WHEN Stanley School contacted Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society for help with their Castles Topic, the Society was delighted to be of assistance. After a discussion with the teachers, it was agreed that the best way to learn about castles was to visit one - so visits to Ardrossan Castle were on the agenda.

In preparation, members of the Society gave a presentation to pupils on the history of the Castle, what to look for on the visit and safety.

Over three days, six primary 2 and 3 classes came to the Castle.

After another safety talk, the pupils started looking for their targets and were very successful in finding them. They were also shown various features of the Castle by Heritage Society members.

The children enjoyed their learning experience.

Miss Lauren McKendrick, primary 2 teacher who co-ordinated the project said: “It was lovely to have the support of a local organisation to enhance our Castles Topic and give more in-depth local history knowledge to the children”.

George McGrattan of the Society added: “The pupils were very interested, enthusiastic and well-behaved. We hope they benefitted from their visit to the Castle.”
