NORTH Ayrshire Foodbank is hoping that locals can help them out as they approach the busy festive period.

And they have three different ways in which people can chip in.

Every Saturday in December, the mobile cinema, which is based in the Church of the Nazerene is screening some of the best Christmas films.

Craig Crosthwaite, co-ordinator for the Foodbank said: “It really is easy - come along to any of our festive films night - entry is FREE - and buy a hot dog, a packet of popcorn, a hot or cold drink, crisps or chocolates. Every sale raises 10p towards our work at the Foodbank.

“This weekend we start our showing of films related to the coming festive season. If your would like more information you can visit our website at themobilecinema.com, or even better come along to a showing.

“We are in the large hall of the Ardrossan Church of the Nazarene. The doors open at 5.30pm and the film starts at 6.00pm. All films are age appropriate for a family showing. “We look forward to you joining us for a great evening watching great films on the best of technology.”

From today the Foodbank hold their biggest collection event and over three days hope to collect as much as possible, with the help of three local supermarkets.

Craig explained: “The three days of November 30th to December 2nd are the days we hold our biggest collection event thanks to the Corporate support of Tescos. Volunteers will be attending all three stores of Kilbirnie, Irvine and Saltcoats asking shoppers to assist the Foodbank to keep providing food to people in crisis.

“This winter is expected to be particularly difficult due to the introduction to all benefit claimants of Universal Credit. The main issue will be the waiting period for funds to be received which could last seven weeks unless the Government reduces it to four weeks. Those with children will be particularly vulnerable during a period of national holidays and festivities. This statement is not a political statement, it is one of process and recognising the issues already experienced by others across the country.

“Normally we receive six tons of food to help us through the winter months. As food is issued at a rate of 3/4 of a ton per week this will assist us through to the end of February.

“In advance of the three-day event we thank all the compassionate shoppers for their donations. We will ensure your sacrificial giving reach those in need.”

And in a big move, the Foodbank is looking to purchase its very first van. They have tried in the past to acquire a van but efforts so far have not brought the dream to reality.

Craig explained: “The Foodbank is attempting to acquire its first van to increase its capacity to carry out the essential work of getting food to those in need. The grant received is not sufficient to purchase a van and although we have added funds we are still short of the VAT. If you are able to consider helping us through crowdfunding please visit our appeal here.

There are several “rewards” or you can simply donate. If you select a “reward” it can be a private screening or joining us for a special film night for children one week and older children and adults the following.

“Thank you for helping us to reach more people and receive more donations.”
