The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a dog was discovered on train tracks in Ardrossan at the weekend.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted to the discovery by a vigilant member of the public.

Another dog was also found in Muirkirk, East Ayrshire on the same day.

Scottish SPCA Ayr Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre Manager Marion Hainey said: “Toby is a gorgeous springer spaniel who was found late on Sunday near Muirkirk. He was extremely dirty, smelly and thin and has a few health issues.

“Minnie was spotted running near the train tracks on Princes Street in Ardrossan and is also very thin.

“Neither dog has been microchipped which since 2016 has been a legal requirement.

“At this stage we are appealing for information but can’t rule out that they may have been abandoned.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
