A dad, who struck his teenage daughter on the legs with a leather belt, has been placed under supervision.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons admitted assaulting the 13-year-old when he entered her bedroom uninvited in October last year.

He appeared before Sheriff Desmond Leslie at Ayr Sheriff Court last week. The court heard how the girl had returned home from school with a friend who later left.

Depute Fiscal Jason Bell, said: “The accused went into her bedroom as there had been some argument between her and the Army Cadets. He removed his belt and struck her to the legs.

“The girl was crying and was upset which was heard by her brother who left the property. The accused struck the complainer with the belt again. Police were contacted and spoke to the accused.”

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor Glen Davies, said: “There is a very complicated background report. This is a man who has brought up his four children single handedly with no issues.

“He found it very difficult to deal with a catalogue of events. She had been shoplifting and was being defiant towards him. This has been a case where the child misbehaves and the parent overreacts.

“My client is remorseful, very ashamed and wants to put his family back together. He would welcome any additional support.”

Addressing the dock, Sheriff Leslie, said: “Regardless of her and your issues, this is no way to discipline or gain control over your daughter.

Violence towards a child is unacceptable in any content.”
The man has been placed on a community payback order and will remain under supervision for one year.
