Ardrossan Castle was recently the subject of a major survey by Historic Environment Scotland (HES).
HES is responsible for the investigation and recording of Scotland’s built heritage, as well as the preservation and protection of over three hundred sites and five million drawings, photographs and documents of historical interest.
The aim of the seven day visit by two archaeologists, three surveyors and three photographers was to add to existing knowledge of the Castle by examining its visible remains.
This was done by photography, measurement and drawing using advanced technological equipment.
The data obtained can be interpreted by archaeologists to give a better understanding of the architecture, age and function of the Castle.
Ardrossan Castle was last formally surveyed in 1982 and the archaeology notes can be read online at https://canmore.org.uk/event/698607.
Canmore is an online database managed by HES. It contains more than 320,000 records of archaeological sites across Scotland.
When the report on the recent survey is complete, it will be uploaded to Canmore.
