THIS week marked the 75th Anniversary of the sinking of the HMS Dasher off the coast of Ardrossan.

A sombre precession of events took place with family members of the lost there to honour them.

On Saturday, local veterans, family members and guests boarded the CalMac ferry to Arran. It stopped over the spot where the Dasher was lost.

A moving ceremony was conducted by Canon Matt McManus and wreaths and flowers were laid with messages sent to those who were lost.

On their arrival on Arran, a further smaller service was conducted on the pier The following morning, the sun was shining as the marchers gathered under Parade Marshall Paul Coffey at 11.15am to arrive at the Dasher Memorial at 11.30am.

Canon Matt McManus started the very moving service, he reminded everyone that this was the 75th anniversary of the loss of the dasher, well over 50 floral tributes were laid, including ones by Inspector Convery of Police Scotland, Sea Cadets and North Ayrshire Council.

Thereafter, all parties were invited to St Peter-In-Chains where Legion President Alastair Kennedy was surprised by a presentation from friends of the Dasher.

Provost Ian Clarkson made the presentation.

A special journey was also undertaken on Tuesday, March 27 and the the ferry once again stopped over the spot where the Dasher was lost, exactly 75 years after the tragic incident.
